A CBIC trade facilitation programme that certifies compliant, secure supply chain businesses for faster clearances, fewer inspections and other customs benefits.
The Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) programme is run by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) to recognise businesses in the international supply chain that maintain strong compliance and security standards. Certified businesses get tangible operational benefits โ quicker clearances, fewer physical checks, and priority handling โ in exchange for demonstrating sound internal controls and a clean compliance record. The programme has multiple tiers: T1, T2 and T3 for importers/exporters (with benefits increasing at each tier), and a separate LO (Logistics Operator) tier for allied service providers such as custodians, terminal operators and freight forwarders.
Faster customs clearance, fewer physical examinations, priority processing at ports and airports, and โ for some tiers โ deferred duty payment facilities.
Validity depends on the tier, typically around 3 years for higher tiers [TODO: confirm from policy docs].
Most tiers expect a minimum track record of customs-related business activity, generally in the range of 2-3 years, before a business is eligible to apply.
